Pool-Based Mind-Body Connection

Who likes Aqua Yoga classes?

Even the gentle, low-impact nature of yoga can be modified to add variety and make it even more accessible. Group class instructors at WK Fitness & Wellness Centers do just that when they lead yoga exercises for men and women in the water. Aqua Yoga is beneficial for yoga beginners, seniors, pregnant women and any person with joint mobility issues.

What is an Aqua Yoga class?

Aqua Yoga is an alternative form of yoga performed in the pool. Participation in this class provides the same benefits as its land-based counterpart, but with even less stress on your joints and muscles. Exercises performed include variations of yoga poses, breathwork and meditation, as many are easily adapted to water.

Some of the yoga poses you’ll do in this class are the tree pose, mountain pose, warrior pose, chair pose and peaceful warrior pose, among many others. Yoga poses that require more modification due to the water environment include the bow pose that is normally done lying face down. Since this is not possible in the water, floating on your back allows a floating upward bow pose.

Cobra pose can be modified by standing up while holding the side of the pool. Water noodles and other water tools can help modify the boat pose. Kickboards are also helpful for yoga modifications. Almost any yoga pose can be modified for the water with some creative, flexible thinking. Playful variations of yoga poses are encouraging for people who may not be able to do these poses on land. Our certified group instructor has a range of work that challenges members and encourages consistency. Member feedback allows adjustments to the workout plan.

The goals of Aqua Yoga are to improve flexibility and increase balance and range of motion while reducing joint pressure and bone stress. The benefits are many, including decreased stress and anxiety, increased core strength and stronger posture control. Balance work is enhanced by water buoyancy, which results in fewer falls and injury to keep us safe as we age in place.

The simplicity of slipping into the heated pool and working your body, mind and soul toward better health awaits. Proper swim attire and shoes that protect the soles of your feet are required. Towels are provided. All the exercise equipment you’ll need is provided at WK Fitness & Wellness Centers with a pool. Soft music accompanies the class and provides a perfect backdrop for peace and serenity.

When and where does the Aqua Yoga class meet?

Aqua Yoga classes are held in the heated pool at WK Health & Fitness Center on Greenwood Road. Check the online class schedule for the current day and time. Classes meet for 50 minutes every week.

Why do Aqua Yoga?

If you are searching for a low impact exercise class to work your muscles, increase flexibility, improve balance and relax your mind, you will find all that in Aqua Yoga. Some people who may never try yoga on land enjoy this water form of yoga because of the low impact workout and wonderful benefits. Many members state they have achieved a greater range of motion and flexibility while practicing yoga in the pool. Out of the water, these improvements continue to be appreciated as members go about daily living activities. Because Aqua Yoga is a mind-body exercise class, you get the added benefit of centering and meditation. Members say the time spent in Aqua Yoga is time well spent.
