Who likes Tai Chi Sword 32 Form classes?

Tai Chi Sword 32 Form requires focus, concentration and discipline to perform correctly. The class is open to adults looking to improve their physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life. It is considered intermediate level and is easier to learn after attending beginner Tai Chi classes. However, some students enjoy taking this class alongside a beginning class.

What is Tai Chi Sword 32 Form class?

This traditional Chinese martial arts routine is based on the Yang-style Tai Chi sword. Yang is the most popular form of Tai Chi worldwide and the sword form created in 1957 has 32 movements, or forms. The routine is designed to improve balance, coordination and flexibility, while also promoting relaxation and inner peace.

Performed in about five minutes, Tai Chi Sword 32 Form typically uses a straight sword (Taiji Jian) that is approximately 36 inches long and weighs about 1.5 pounds. For safety and security reasons at Willis Knighton Health, a smaller wooden sword is used. Holding the sword with both hands, the routine consists of a series of fluid, graceful movements performed in a slow, meditative manner.

Sword 32 Form is taught in a group class setting that starts with a few minutes of stretching exercises. The routine begins with an opening posture that holds the sword in front of the body with both hands. Emphasis is placed on learning and perfecting the form in a relaxed, fun, social environment. Movements throughout the routine include

  • “Dragonfly touching water”
  • “Big dipper”
  • “Swallow skimming across water”
  • “Sounding the sea”
  • “Lion turning head”
  • “Green dragon emerging from water”
The concluding posture involves returning the sword to its scabbard where it belongs.
