What is a Step Aerobics class?
Exercise science is always pivoting and reinventing new ways to get fit, but some tried and true group exercises never leave the fitness circuit. Step Aerobics uses a bench, or step, with adjustable height to help exercise enthusiasts stay in shape. It stays in vogue thanks to its simplicity, effectiveness and fun. Class participants enjoy learning moves both on and off the step while they jam to great thumping music.
Step Aerobics found its origin by accident in the late 1980s when an experienced fitness instructor had a knee injury. Her physical therapist advised stepping up and down on a milk crate to rehabilitate the knee. At 11 inches tall, the milk crate was too difficult for the injured instructor, so she used her bottom front porch step instead. She quickly realized the great workout value of simply stepping up and down on a stair. An innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, the instructor began to make portable steps from plywood for exercise groups to step together. She breathed life into this accidentally discovered new form of exercise through partnerships with a local gym and a major sporting goods retailer. Step Aerobics worked its way into gyms across the country and around the world with about 11.4 million people enjoying Step Aerobics at the height of its popularity.
