Our group fitness classes offer a friendly atmosphere with a personalized approach to exercise. Classes are taught by nationally certified instructors who excel in motivating and educating. We offer many multi-level classes that will challenge the “fit” member and encourage the “novice” exerciser.
If you have any orthopedic or medical problems, our instructors can offer modifications of specific exercises to meet your needs.
Who likes Chair Strength classes?
This class appeals to a wide range of ladies and gentlemen. Some people have very specific medical needs. For example, those who are preparing for or recovering from joint surgery. If you’ve had hip surgery or knee surgery and your physician releases you for light physical activity, this class is a great way to ease back in to regular movement. Other people are personally looking to increase their mobility so they can more easily lower and lift themselves to chairs, the floor or any level surface in between.
What is a Chair Strength class?
This is a chair class designed to help improve your posture, flexibility, strength and balance. Each class meeting starts with warmup stretches for flexibility, followed by strengthening and endurance exercises that help us function better in our everyday environment.
The fun social environment helps members feel comfortable as they meet challenges set before them. It's easy to build community with peers who share similar circumstances and health and fitness goals.
In addition to the resistance provided by your own body weight, exercise equipment you may use includes the chair, bands, balls, light weights and gliders.
The instructor guides members through exercises they do themselves. An example is walking around the studio to regain strength after surgery. Members are supported with walking in a heel toe pattern at a comfortable pace. Increasing the time and distance walked helps to build endurance. Low impact exercises like walking help relieve stiffness and pain. Repetitive steps also work with muscle memory, a neurological process that allows you to remember certain motor skills so you can perform them automatically without conscious effort.
