Cardio strength and toning workout

Who likes Build & Burn classes?

Are you ready to get your game on by working hard for overall health benefits? The class is for you if you’re seeking to get your body in better condition and gain greater cardio strength. Men and women of all ages and professions – Come in, hit the challenge, then go on about your day.

What is a Build & Burn class?

This class is an intense, total body workout with several circuits. The circuits are designed to build strength and muscles across your body. You'll focus on upper- and lower-body muscle groups, as well as your core.

Classes start with warm-up exercises designed to get your blood pumping and your muscles ready to work. Then, your instructor leads a rotation of challenging exercises to develop total body muscle strength and build cardio strength and endurance. In addition to muscle toning, you’ll burn plenty of calories.

For example, one circuit may involve a series of squats with progressive intensity. You'll start with a basic body weight squat, progress to a sumo squat with weights, elevate the squat by placing your heels on a raised surface, add pulses and knee drives. You’ll go further when the instructor adds bicep curls to squats to make it a compound exercise, which uses several muscle groups simultaneously to perform the move. Compound exercises build strength while providing a solid cardio workout.

Following the strength and muscle building circuit, class members complete additional cardio exercises such as jumping jacks, mountain climbers or burpees. Each of these can be modified for a lower intensity workout. The class instructor leads by example, modeling modifications and progressions.

Take jumping jacks, which in regular form is a whole jump with both legs and arms simultaneously. A modification would be to just step out your left foot or right foot with each arm movement instead of the whole jump. A progression would be where you do a squat between each regular jumping jack. You can gradually increase intensity if you start with a modified jumping jack, move on to a series of regular jumping jacks, then progress to squats between each jump.

Throughout his class, expect to use a variety of equipment provided by Willis Knighton Fitness Centers. You’ll use dumbbells, kettlebells, Bosu balls, medicine balls, balance balls, slider discs, elastic bands, and steps and risers. Build & Burn has a regular instructor who is a clock keeper and your cheerleader.

Your muscles get toned as you move through circuits that work your abs and upper and lower body. In addition to repetitive, high bursts of movement that condition and tone your muscles, you’ll benefit from bone mass improvement and improve your cardiovascular and pulmonary condition. You’ll find yourself able to continue high levels of work for longer periods of time. Increased cardiac output leads to better physical endurance.

Make movement fun. Wear lightweight clothes when you come ready to work out and sweat!
