October Football Season: Your Wellness Preseason
I recently started a new workout routine, and I've been reminded that fitness doesn't come with instant replay. The results take time, but the small wins along the way keep you motivated. It got me thinking about football season and how success starts long before game day. Football teams don't wait until the first game to get in shape. They spend months building strength, practicing fundamentals, and developing habits that prepare them for success. What if we approached our health the same way?
Many people wait until January to start eating better, exercising more, or focusing on wellness. But October is the perfect time to begin. Think of this season as your personal wellness preseason. Small habits started now can help you “tackle” the holidays stronger and start the new year with momentum instead of trying to start over.
Build a winning game plan
Last month, we talked about meal planning and preparing healthy foods ahead of time. Fall is a great opportunity to put those skills into action. These are the fundamentals to getting that touchdown:
- Prep fruits and vegetables for the week. There are so many great containers for taking food on the go.
- Keep healthy snacks visible and easy to grab; use bags or containers to keep portions in check.
- Cook extra protein to use in quick meals; Be sure to include a variety of many sources including beans.
- Make a large batch of soup, stew, or chili for easy lunches and dinners.
Coach’s Pro Tip: When healthy choices are convenient, they are much easier to stick with during busy weeks.
Tailgate without the Timeout
Game Day foods can absolutely be part of a healthy lifestyle:
- Start with vegetables, fruit, or a salad. You be the one to bring a healthy option.
- Choose grilled meats instead of fried options when possible.
- Enjoy favorite game-day foods, but be mindful of portions.
- Stay hydrated throughout the day and alternate water with other beverages.
- Focus on the people and the game while staying active, avoid hanging out at the food table.
Seasonal MVPs
- Sweet potatoes for fiber and lasting energy
- Apples for an easy grab-and-go snack
- Winter squash for soups, stews, and side dishes
- Pecans for healthy fats and crunch
By the time January arrives, you will not be starting your health journey. You will already be well into the season.
