Keep Moving: Exercise for Healthier, Happier Joints

Posted Sep 28, 2026

Dealing with stiff or achy joints? You’re not alone. Joint discomfort can sometimes make exercise feel like the last thing you want to do, but staying active can be one of the best ways to support healthy joints and maintain your mobility.

Move More, Hurt Less

You don’t have to run, jump, or lift heavy weights to get the benefits of exercise. Low-impact activities such as walking, cycling, swimming and water aerobics can get your body moving while putting less stress on your joints. Start with what feels comfortable and gradually build from there.

Build Strength

The muscles surrounding your joints play an important role in providing support and stability. Adding simple strength exercises such as chair squats, leg raises, resistance-band exercises and light weights can help you become stronger and make everyday activities easier.

Stretch and Stay Flexible

A few minutes of gentle stretching can go a long way toward improving flexibility and reducing stiffness. Try adding stretches for your legs, hips, shoulders and back before or after your workout. Remember to move slowly and never force a stretch into pain.

Find What Works for You

Start with low-impact activities. Walking, cycling, swimming and water-based exercise are excellent choices because they allow you to stay active while placing less stress on your joints. Even 10 to 20 minutes of movement can be a good starting point. The best exercise routine is one you enjoy and can stick with. Maybe it’s a morning walk, a group fitness class, a few laps in the pool, or a strength workout with a friend. Every bit of movement counts!

Most importantly, listen to your body. If you experience sharp, severe, or persistent joint pain, take a break and consider talking with a healthcare professional about the right activities for you.
