Stretch Your Way to Better Results: Why Stretching Matters Before and After Your Workout

Posted Jul 28, 2026

Whether you’re lifting weights, running on the treadmill or taking a group fitness class, stretching is one of the most beneficial and often overlooked parts of any exercise routine.  It’s also one of the simplest ways to improve your workouts and support your overall health.

Taking just a few minutes to stretch before your workout can improve performance, reduce discomfort and help keep your body moving at its best. It also helps prepare your muscles and joints for movement by increasing blood flow, improving mobility and enhancing performance. Dynamic stretches such as leg swings, arm circles or walking lunges are great options to help your body warm up and reduce the risk of injury.

After your workout, stretching plays an important role in recovery. Gentle static stretches can help reduce muscle tightness, improve flexibility and promote relaxation as your body cools down. Regular post-workout stretching may also improve mobility over time, helping you stay active and comfortable both in and out of the gym. Stretching after your workout also aids in recovery and reduces tightness.

Making stretching part of your fitness routine doesn’t have to take long. It will only take five to ten minutes, and that can make a noticeable difference. A little time spent caring for your body before and after exercise can go a long way toward helping you move, feel and perform your best.
