Beat the Louisiana Heat: Hydration is Your Superpower

Posted Jul 28, 2026

If you've stepped outside lately, you've probably noticed two things: It's hot, and it somehow feels even hotter.  While most of us know we should drink more water, hydration is about much more than quenching thirst. It's one of the simplest ways to support energy, concentration, heart health, digestion and overall wellness.  Although we talk most about it during summer, hydration is an important health habit all year long.

Know the signs — By the time you feel thirsty, your body may already be signaling that it needs fluids. Even mild dehydration can contribute to:

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Increased hunger (sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger!)

Hydration is more than just water — Water is the star player when it comes to hydration, but it's not working alone. When you sweat, your body also loses electrolytes, the minerals that help keep your muscles, nerves and fluid levels in balance.  The good news? Most people can replace electrolytes through everyday foods and beverages.

Do you need a sports drink? — Not always. For most daily activities, water and a healthy diet provide everything your body needs. Sports drinks may be helpful during prolonged exercise, outdoor work, or activities lasting more than an hour in high heat. Pro tip: Many sports drinks contain added sugars and junk ingredients, so choose wisely and read nutrition labels.

Add hydrating foods to your summer plate — Watermelon, bananas, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce and bell peppers

Quick lifestyle tips for hot summer days

  • Start your day with a glass of water before coffee.
  • Keep a reusable water bottle nearby.
  • Set hydration reminders on your phone.
  • Alternate sugary or alcoholic beverages with water.
  • Check the color of your urine — it should be pale yellow.
  • Schedule outdoor activities during cooler morning or evening hours.
  • Enjoy water-rich fruits and vegetables with meals and snacks.
  • Don't forget another wellness superpower — sleep! Adequate rest helps your body recover and regulate temperature during hot summer months.

Remember, when Louisiana turns up the heat, make hydration your superpower.  Your body, brain and energy levels will thank you — one sip at a time.
