New Season, New Reasons for Wellness
With summer officially here, it's a great opportunity to refresh our routines and try out some healthy habits! Did you know that people in the world's longest-living communities—known as Blue Zones—love to unwind with a walk after dinner? A quick 10- to 20-minute stroll can do wonders for your well-being, from lowering blood sugar and helping digestion to supporting a healthy heart. Small steps really do add up to a healthier, happier you!
In addition to the health benefits mentioned above, this habit also provides a chance to unwind and connect with friends and family. Sharing a walk or conversation with someone you care about reminds us that connection and community are powerful forms of medicine too. Walking after meals can be one of the most impactful changes you make this summer.
With the warm weather also comes summers abundance of fresh and nutrient rich food. Take advantage of these and add some to your plate all summer long: Pro Tip: Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal.
- Berries and watermelon – hydrating and rich in antioxidants
- Tomatoes – support heart health
- Leafy greens – high in fiber and vitamins
- Zucchini, peppers, eggplant – perfect for grilling
June is Men’s Health Month, a time to encourage men to take charge of their health. Here are some key reminders:
- Schedule annual wellness exams. If you need a physician, check our Find a Doctor page at wkhs.com.
- Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. We manage what we measure.
- Aim for at least 150 minutes of activity per week. After dinner walks can make a dent here!
- Pay attention to mental health and stress. Remember connection helps with both.
Preventive care and early detection are critical; small steps today can make a big impact long-term.
As the summer begins, consider this challenge:
- Take a walk outdoors three times per week
