Heat, Hydration and Health - Two You Can Affect

Posted Jul 27, 2025

Hydration is essential for overall health and well-being. Water plays a crucial role in nearly every function of the human body, from regulating body temperature in hot summer months, to supporting digestion and joint health. Hydration supports kidney function by helping your body flush out toxins and waste. It helps maintain moisture and elasticity for healthier skin. Proper hydration also helps support your energy levels and muscle performance.

Some downsides of dehydration include fatigue, decreased endurance, difficulty concentrating, headaches and muscle cramps. Without enough fluids, the body struggles to perform even basic tasks efficiently. Drinking enough water each day is one of the building blocks to a better quality of life.

Top Hydration Tips for August

  • Drink before you’re thirsty. Thirst is a late indicator of dehydration. Sip water consistently throughout the day.
  • Fuel with water-rich foods. Watermelon, cucumbers, oranges and lettuce are all excellent, delicious and refreshing choices.
  • Hydrate before and after workouts. Drink at least 16 ounces of water one to two hours before exercising and replenish fluids afterward.
  • Watch for signs of dehydration. Dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue and dark urine can all signal the need for more fluids.
  • Skip the sugar overload. Water plus electrolytes is the best way to hydrate; however, avoid sugary sports drinks that are full of dyes and artificial sweeteners. Instead, add fruit or a sugar-free packet of electrolytes to a glass or thermos of water, especially if you’re engaging in prolonged, intense exercise.
