Common Misconceptions in Strength Training

Posted Aug 26, 2024

Strength training offers many benefits beyond just building muscle. It enhances overall physical strength, which can improve daily functional activities such as lifting, carrying, and climbing stairs. Unfortunately, there are some common misconceptions that come along with how some people perceive strength training. We’d love to help clear up a few of those for you.

  1. Only for bodybuilders: Many people believe that strength training is only for people looking to build large muscles or become bodybuilders. In reality, strength training is beneficial for everyone regardless of fitness goals, whether it’s general fitness, weight loss, hormonal function, mental health or improved overall health.
  2. Makes you bulky: A common fear, especially among women, is that strength training leads to unwanted bulk. However, strength training can help tone and shape the body without significant increases in muscle size, especially when combined with proper nutrition.
  3. Only for young people: Some believe that strength training is only suitable for the young and fit. However, older adults can greatly benefit from it, as it helps maintain muscle mass, bone density and overall functional ability.
  4. Dangerous and leads to injury: While improper technique can lead to injuries in all forms of exercise, strength training is safe when performed correctly. Learning proper form and starting with manageable weights can prevent injuries and promote safe progression.

Understanding these misconceptions helps people make informed decisions for improved health and well-being. If you ever have any questions or interests regarding strength training, please contact one of our expert staff and we’ll be happy to assist you.
